The Good Ghosts Of Planet 173

ABOUT
Michael René Sell is a German artist living and working in Vienna. His practice began early, shaped by a fascination with literature and sound. Growing up without access to art, he developed his own ways to bring ideas to life, creating symbols to perform and share his compositions.
He studied Art and Digital Media at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and textile techniques in contemporary art at E.N.P.E.G. La Esmeralda in Mexico City.
Today, Sell works as a notation artist, composer, and narrator of the invisible, translating fleeting moments and abstract states into music, movement, and visual art. Since 2024, he has been creating Planet 173, a universe inhabited by 173 beings inspired by facets of his own character.
Selected works are available as editions and prints, offering a way to connect with and bring home a piece of this evolving artistic world.
Discover Planet 173 And Its Sorroundings

Why Planet 173
The idea for Planet 173 began during a difficult period in Sell’s life. In a moment of complete stillness, he experienced himself as if seen from above—fragmented into separate parts, each carrying a distinct feeling or state.
This moment led to a simple but powerful thought:
What if these fragments could exist on their own?
From this, Planet 173 emerged—a place inhabited by beings shaped from different aspects of the self. Each one carries a specific quality, emotion, or trait, and must find its place within a shared environment.
What started as a personal response gradually opened into something broader: a space to reflect on coexistence, difference, and the possibility of beginning again. The planet continues to grow over time, with new figures, sounds, and stories being added.
The number 173 comes from Sell’s affinity for prime numbers. It marks the structure of the world, but also reflects an ongoing process—one that is never fully complete.
Through his work, Sell invites viewers to enter this evolving environment, to recognize aspects of themselves within it, and to form their own connection to its elements.
Each piece can be understood as a fragment of this larger world—something that can be experienced individually, while remaining part of a bigger whole.
