A Glimpse Into A New Language
Each work originates from an original drawing by Michael René Sell. All works are part of an overarching vision that began at a very early stage. In second grade, a teacher confiscated Sell’s individually developed letters and passed them on to his mother with a complaint about what her son was doing. She kept these works, and many years later Sell rediscovered them. He then further developed the script and integrated it into his art.
His interest in ancient writing systems, as well as in signs and symbols in general, is used in his artistic practice to formulate musical scores, dance instructions, and narratives.

About
Michael René Sell is a German artist who lives and works in Vienna. His path into the art world began at a young age, rooted in his fascination with literature
and sound. Growing up in a working class household without a connection to art, he developed his own ways and methods to realize what he envisioned. As a teenager, he recorded sounds using a dictaphone and arranged them on a computer. In order to perform these compositions live, he began to develop his own symbols for different sounds. This way of working continues to resonate throughout his practice to this day.
Today,Sell is known as a notation artist, composer, and narrator of the invisible. He captures silent processes, fleeting moments, and abstract states, translating them into music, movement, and visual art. Through his self-developed systems of symbols, signs, and notations, he creates unique mythologies that invite audiences into worlds of sound and
imagination.
Since 2024, he has been building his own planet: Planet 173. It is inhabited by 173 beings inspired by his own character traits, amplified to extremes. On this planet, he experiments freely, merging music, dance, storytelling, and visual art into immersive performances and thematic installations.
His exhibitions are showninternationally and offer audiences the opportunity to experience his works on site, discover personal favorite notations, and take home a piece of his ever-evolving artistic universe.
“Browse through my editions, discover your favorite work, and take a piece of my art home with you. All works are available as prints, and it always gives me particular joy when someone finds something that truly resonates with them.”
