An Eccentric Artist With Unique Works
The Good Ghosts Of Planet 173

ABOUT
Michael René Sell is a German artist living and working in Vienna. His practice began early, shaped by a fascination with literature and sound. Growing up without access to art, he developed his own ways to bring ideas to life, creating symbols to perform and share his compositions.
He studied Art and Digital Media at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and textile techniques in contemporary art at E.N.P.E.G. La Esmeralda in Mexico City.
Today, Sell works as a notation artist, composer, and narrator of the invisible, translating fleeting moments and abstract states into music, movement, and visual art. Since 2024, he has been creating Planet 173, a universe inhabited by 173 beings inspired by facets of his own character.
Selected works are available as editions and prints, offering a way to connect with and bring home a piece of this evolving artistic world.
Discover Planet 173 And Its Sorroundings

Why Planet 173
The idea for Planet 173 was born out of a painful breakup. To dull the pain from time to time, Sell was given a few prescription pills by a neurologist friend to calm himself. Lying on the floor of his studio, he saw himself from a drone-like perspective, shattered into individual pieces—a rushing sensation that managed to articulate his emotions with unsettling precision.
From this emerged the idea: What if all these fragments were creatures, built upon Sell’s character traits, now hurled onto a planet where they must build a new life for themselves?
Although born from a negative experience, the potential of this idea became clear over time. A restart—not only for oneself, but also for humanity’s eternal task: exploring and striving for a form of good coexistence.
A new era, a new calendar; emotions and states that one can converse with due to their materialization; plants that reflect moods; and, of course, the coexistence of these diverse creatures and extreme characters.
The number 173 stems from Sell’s affinity for prime numbers. It is a perfect number, as both the number itself and the sum of its digits are prime numbers. Sell also plans to live to be 173 years old.
On this planet, Sell continues to explore sounds and adds stories of the individual creatures to them. He has set himself the task of writing a screenplay in the form of visual art, with the aim of developing Planet 173 into a film series in the future.
